Sacred Ibis in NW Italy: a long established population.
Introduction
Sacred Ibis is a feral species often taken in captivity in many aviaries and zoological gardens. France and Italy host also naturalised populations originated from escaped birds.
Since 1989, Sacred Ibis started to breed at Oldenico heronry, Vercelli, NW Italy. The first breeding attempt had no luck because of the nest abandoning but numbers subsequently started to grow up (up to 10 breeding pairs in 1998) and right now many dozens of birds (sometimes more than 60 birds) are counted in Fall in the area.
How to get to :
Oldenico heronry is located on the right side of the Sesia river inside the Lame del Sesia NP. Look at the map
To get to Oldenico, exit the A-4 Torino-Milan in Greggio and follow the signs to Vercelli. Stop the car in Oldenico village and park the car in the cemetery parking lot. A dirty road leads to the river embarkment. Walk 250 meters following the right side of the river to a hide located just in front of the heronry.
The Lame del Sesia NP is also good for herons (including Purple, Great White, Squacco, Cattle, Night Heron), migrating waders (Ruff, Avocet, Black-tailed Godwit), and hosts the biggest Italian population of Bobwhite (also a cat C bird).
